A. Graham Smith, MD FRCS FACS
Arnold Graham Smith graduated M.B.B.S. from London University in 1964 and entered post graduate surgical training. He was awarded The Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1970 and then entered six months Neurosurgical training at the Radcliff Infirmary in Oxford. The following year he commenced Orthopaedic training, studying for two years in Oxford, England and then moving to London, England as a Senior Resident. He interrupted his training in London to spend a year’s fellowship at Rancho Los Amigos Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Hospital in Los Angeles and returned to the U.K. in 1976 to complete his Orthopaedic training.
In 1977 he was appointed Surgical Director of the Spinal Cord Injury Program at the Roosevelt Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital in Georgia. Numerous innovative programs were begun there, including the use of air fluidized beds for the treatment of pressure sores and the introduction in the State of Georgia of radiofrequency rhizotomy for uncontrolled post traumatic spasticity.
In 1981 he moved to Jacksonville, Florida where he now resides. His initial appointment was Director of the Spinal Cord Injury program at the Rehabilitation Center in Jacksonville. He also commenced a rehabilitation and surgical program for non paraplegic lumbar spine injuries. He is a firm believer that multi disciplinary care for people in chronic pain produces the best holistic results. In addition to the treatment of the lumbar spine itself, he has developed a new program for surgical treatment of chronic sacroiliac injuries, integrating with myofascial therapy before and after surgical treatment.
Following his move to the United States he was awarded the diploma of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons as well as the American College of Surgeons. Most recently he is a Charter Diplomate of the American Board of Spine Surgery and currently serves on their Board of Directors.
